What is the British Curriculum at Lukenya

What is the British Curriculum at Lukenya?:

We offer an internationalised version of the course that pupils in Britain might sit for.  The qualification that we offer at the end of Year 11 (roughly Form 4, but sat by children a year younger than this) is the IGCSE or International General Certificate of Secondary Education.

The major difference between the British GCSE and our IGCSE is that the IGCSE covers more global topics, meaning that we can design courses that take into account the fact that we live in Kenya!  We believe that this is culturally and socially responsible of us.  Pupils usually sit for 8 or 9 IGCSEs, but may sit for more, and this qualification enables graduates to enter further or higher education in Kenya and abroad.  Pupils leaving us with strong grades can directly enter private universities in Kenya; leavers wishing to enter public universities may require an extra year of study.

Lukenya’s British Curriculum School is divided into two main sections:

  1. The lower secondary, or Key Stage 3 – in these years, 7, 8 and 9, pupils study a broad range of subjects from the core areas of English, Mathematics and Science to second-language Kiswahili, Religious Studies, Geography, Art and so on. At the end of Year 9, pupils and parents choose which subjects will be chosen as ‘electives’ or options for study from the beginning of Year 10.  In Key Stage 3, we also have timetabled Personal, Social and Health Education (or ‘Life Skills’) lessons and Physical Education

  1. The upper secondary, or Key Stage 4 – in these years, 10 and 11, the examinable IGCSE syllabus is taught in a broad range of subjects from the separate pure sciences and other academic subjects through to innovative job-relevant subjects such as Travel-&-Tourism and Environmental Management. All subjects have terminal external examinations in October/November; in the sciences, some papers are practical papers.  In addition to exams, many subjects offer coursework, and our teachers have received training in this; coursework is a little like university term papers, and this project work not only helps to boost grades, but also to prepare leavers for university-level studies

The subject choice at IGCSE:

Mathematics, English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Management, Information and Communications Technology, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Art and Design (many areas of art are offered), Second-language French, Second-language Kiswahili, Literature in English, Business, Travel-&-Tourism.  Economics is sometimes offered, and pupils with additional languages can sometimes be entered for these, too.

Music lessons, especially in keyboard and voice, are available at a small extra cost.

All lessons last one hour, in line with best practice, enabling students to learn and prove their learn through classroom activities.  The core academic day runs from 8am to 4pm.

All teachers teach only their specialist areas of study, and have further access to British Curriculum training during their time at school.  Apart from in Kiswahili and the occasional History topic, all resources used are only up-to-date British Curriculum resources, whether electronic or paper.  Academic trips are offered to support subject study, and all day such day trips are part of the basic fees.

ICT/Computing is taught as a specialist subject, but we endeavour to employ ICT across the curriculum spectrum of subjects; likewise, we try to encourage literacy across the curriculum.

For further information on the Key Stage 4/IGCSE courses offered, please click on the accompanying document or visit the website of our examinations board, Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).

All external examinations are sat at the school, and we take pride in the integrity of the examinations season; to this end, we always invite external invigilators and have frequently been inspected, receiving ‘Good’ and ‘Excellent’ ratings during visits.

Our British Curriculum is highly organised, our teachers are trained professionals, and we know what we’re doing and have been doing successfully for years.
