Extra-curricular activities

Extra-curricular activities

Students  are also able to participate in a wide range of sports which offer not only high levels of involvement, but also significant success in unusual areas. Lukenya Academy IGCSE offers an extraordinary number of opportunities in extra-curricular activities.

Service is a key aspect of the programme to encourage our pupils to be empathetic, conscientious and responsible. The President’s Award Scheme , St John Ambulance , our in house Work Experience Scheme, are all offered as part of our extra curricular activities.

Co-curricular Activities at Lukenya:

Being a boarding school, we take a great interest in the whole life of a student, and consequently we offer many activities both inside school and during our many trips.

Clubs and Societies:

We have two major clubs that have a foot both inside and outside school: St Johns Ambulance and the President’s Award, both of which are extremely popular.  St Johns pupils wear the uniform on Mondays and Fridays and participate in extensive life-saving first aid training, water rescue training and fire rescue training.  They raise our flag and go on numerous shorter and longer trips, and they do the school proud.  The President’s Award boosts pupil confidence by providing expeditions, skills training and community service opportunities from Bronze to Gold level.  Numerous pupils have successfully completed their Gold Award, and they receive this at State House every year.

We also have numerous internal school clubs, some of which are permanent, others of which emerge if we have interested students; we adapt clubs to pupil needs.  Clubs include: Cooking, Drama/Film (we had a pupil win ‘Best Actor’ at the national levels of the Kenya Schools Drama Festivals), Music (we have a band and a choir, and have had success at the national levels of the Kenya Schools Music Festivals), French, Science, ICT and the ildlife/Environment Club.  All clubs are active in school, but also go out on various trips.

In sports, we participate in the Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA) circuit, and frequently host inter-school events or visit other schools for competitions.  Often, we win, despite being a small school!  Sports include: football, basketball, volleyball, table-tennis, badminton, swimming (we have a pool for fun swims and serious team swimming), and handball.  We also have a selection of horses, which pupils can ride.  Frequently, the Mountain Club of Kenya offers interested pupils climbing lessons on the rock-face above our school.

Other Activities:

As well as regular events such as Prize-giving Day and Prayer Day, during which pupils demonstrate their various talents, we also offer DSTV in the main school for all pupils and for boys on a Saturday evening, and satellite television in the girls’ dormitory.  Pupils also organise internal sports days and talent shows from time to time, in order to showcase their skills.
